CamaroBen's Homepage, 2nd GEN Camaro's RULE!!!
Hey, I'm Ben Terwilliger, and this is my 5 minutes worth of
Camaro stuff. For links to the best online parts distributors
and some truly awesome CAMARO sites, visit my link's pages. More pics of my Camaro and
engine work are on my MORE Ben stuff page. Here you will find a little
about my 1979 Camaro and the modifications I have done to it.
My Cam'ro is a '79 coupe w/ a 350. Here I am sitting on the fender after I just bought it
You see the orange mess before, 305 heads, a sorry ass Holley
intake(better than cast iron, but not by much)and the classic
late 70's early 80's jungle of vaccumm hoses and sensor wires.
I had owned the car for about 5 months at this point, and the
biggest change I had done was DX the Quadrajunk for that Holley
750. It's vac, not a double pumper, but I do not experience lag
or hesitation anywhere.
Click on any engine pic and goto my thumbs page of more engine work and stuff.
Here I am with a freind putting it back together with World
Products heads, a new cam and an Edlebrock CBX3 intake. I dimpled my hood with the aircleaner post, and I had already cut
it down to only 1.75"!!! Now it's barely over an inch long,
which requires me to use a trick K&N drop base 14" chrome air cleaner. Looks
good, though it's sucking HOT air right off the intake manifold. Also, look how
nice it looks after a couple of cans of engine paint. Beware of spray
paint rebuilds, this motor looked like a million bucks when the tired
bearings gave up the goose(see below, BAD NEWS)
OK so maybe I'm a cheap bastard, but this exhaust ROCKS!! It cost me
\$21 for the pipe(2.5"aluminized)$11.50 for the cutaways(see the zoomed view)$18.98
for the thrush mufflers. It's so freaking loud w/ that cam that
I IDLE through the mall parking lot and set off alarms. Undo some wing
nuts and look out, open exhaust a foot behind the headers. It will give you
a head ache after a while.
One of my buddies, George Alford, telling me how much he wants his pic taken
The Camaro in action, the pic quality is poor b/c I captured it from video

This is the sound bite from the pics you see here. The neighbors were not pleased,
I don't know why, it sounds good to me.[960K]Burn WAV
MODIFICATIONS:
in order I did them, and some results
- plugs, wires, oil and filter change, battery, and alternator
(this was in the first two weeks, the battery and alt failed on
me right away. I was not pleased.
- Holley 750 Vac secondary 4 barrel. Instant grin factor.
(Upgrading to a "performance type" carb is one of the best "first" upgrades for any old powered car)
- 3:73 richmond gears.consequently, new BFG 235/60-15's immedeatly after. A big change in rear gears turns it into
an entirly different machine, as long as you don't care about trivial things like fuel ecomony, tire life, wear on your
transmission and drivetrain, and cruising at over a hundred(unless you have a 6 speed)
- sun pro mount anywhere tach
(cheap, 35 bucks, looks cool on your steering wheel, and makes you realize you now have
to spin the crank @3200rpm just to flow with traffic on the highway)
- 82-88 15x7 aluminum camaro rims, painted to match(by me)
(a must, 14 inch wheels suck, you can't get good rubber for
them. plus they were steel, one of those alone weighed more than
a 15x7 WITH a 235/60 on it! Besides, modern wheels look great on
older cars)
- the Exhaust:
Another must. Super chevy and Chevy high performance, my main
sources of knowledge, always mention that you must breath first.
and though you probably wouldn't want to go the cheap route like me, you NEED to replace
the factory crap, as it always sucks.
- The CAM:
(465/465 lift, 230/230 duration, 110 lobe sep, hydraulic. 89.95
from SUMMIT)This is another must, commonly overlooked b/c it's
an intimidating task to someone who has never removed a valve cover.
factory cams are weak, made to produce good gas mileage and thats about it.
sacrifice a few mpg and get results, make more torque down low with
a little more duration, make more horsepower by lifting the vales higher
. or get stupid and have max DUR and max LIFT.
- Heads, World Products S/R torquers
(2.02/1.60 Manley valves, hardened seats, .510"lift springs,
67cc chambers, cast iron. crane roller tip 1:5 rocker arms)You need good heads.
the valves need to flow air and fuel in, and then get exhaust out
asap. the heads I have here are cheap(700bucks) brand new, completly
assembled.
- Intake
(its an Edlebrock dual plane aluminum job. very tall, maybe
hurting torque down low in the rpm band. It reads CBX3 across
the front, if you know something about this intake please
E-mail me. I got off a guy who got it off a SB 400 powered
monster truck) This combination of intake, cam, heads, carb,
and exhaust really work well.
About me,
I am Ben Terwilliger, camaro enthusiast. I have always loved
American muscle cars, even before I new the difference between front and rear wheel
drive. Now I refer to imports and compacts as "wrong" wheel drive.
I am an Army soldier stationed in Germany, previously stationed at Ft Bragg
NC, 82nd AIRBORNE 1-325 A.I.R. My wife Amanda and I have two sons, Benjamin
Hunter and Christopher Maxim. We've been married for over 2 years,
at the time we tied the knot I was driving a 1967 ElCamino. I loved that car.
I sold it to a freind(with my wife telling me not too)thinking I wasn't really getting
rid of it, but he drove it cross the country to California. I now know
what "sellers remorse" is.
Bad news, spun(or melted) bearing on the crank. Something is making WAY too
much noise in there. I had the motor out, and I was planning on doing a cheap rebuild
after I had the crank turned, but I ran out of time and had to come here to Germany. Now, instead of a cheap rebuild, I found a great deal on a short block,
LarrysPerformance.
So, I will have 9:1 comp w/ my 67cc heads, Hyper. pistons(good if I ever decide to use
juice) and a bottom end that won't die on me if I spin it past 5500RPM.
I am learning web design as I do this, and will put up more and neater stuff,
including links to cool stuff like rear gear caculator, 1/4mile ET predictor, and links
to all the must see camaro sites. My goal is to have a pic or two of each camro ever made, and something
to say about each year.Update: Check out the rest of my site, I have
online calculators on my links pages, and I have swiped pics of
every year of camaro and seperated them by GEN.
Hey fellow Camarophiles, if you like my site let me know!!!
If any of you know me and want to tell me what a crappy job I've
done TELL ME!!! As you know, we're here in Germany and always
like to hear from people, even if it's strangers knocking this
site. I am always looking to chat with other Camaro fanatics
as well. If you know of a chat room where people get
together everynow and then, let me know. I also have A.I.M. and
MSN Messanger.
